ASP #4 Ideas About the Main Character

In A Separate Peace by John Knowles there are two characters that really stick out past the rest. One of them is Gene Forrester, an intellectual nerdy kid that is devoted more to his studies and academic skills rather than his athletic skills. What I like about Gene is his academic success and his dedication to studying, while still having the ability to play multiple kinds of sports exceptionally well. His intuitive attitude towards every subject of life is something I dislike. He doesn’t seem like a very funny person considering that his thoughts aren’t really evoking to me. I enjoy being around people that can make everyone laugh, and Gene doesn’t fit in that area.

The other character is Phineas, but the students at the school just call him Finny. Finny is a foil to Gene considering that his athletic abilities are incredibly good, yet his academics are terrible. I like his athletic ability and his natural instinct to play any sport imaginable, even the ones that are freshly made up in his mind. One thing that I dislike about Finny is his attitude towards academics, as he believes that they don’t matter at all. He thinks that sports are the only meaning in life up until his “accident.”

ASP #9 Theme

A theme expressed in A Separate Peace is the youth of the environment and the people that inhabit it. Finny truly symbolizes the youth of children in today’s world. His playful nature and his attitude of “I never get in trouble” is the reason why he resembles children. They believe that they can do whatever they please and can remain out of “timeout.” Another theme in the novel is friendship, involving Gene and Finny. They both admire each other, but of course there is always jealousy in the relationship. Gene is jealous of Finny’s amazing athletic ability, his way of getting out of trouble all the time, and his popularity around the entire school. Finny is jealous of Gene because of his scholar ability. Finny wants Gene’s work ethic of studying for each test and doing his homework every night. Gene obviously wants to be more like Finny than Finny would want to be Gene. His jealously led him into even acquiring Finny’s pink shirt and wearing it in their dorm. The friendship that Gene and Finny is very grand, as they are so jealous of each other yet they still stay in the same room. There have been multiple complications in their friendship, but they stay together through their hardships.

ASP #3 Setting and Genre

The setting in A Separate Peace by John Knowles is in rural New Hampshire at a military school along the Devon and Naguamsett rivers. The school is called Devon because nobody would want to go to a school called Naguamsett. The time period of the novel is in 1942, during World War 2. One of the key settings in the novel is a tree of medium height right beside the Devon river. This is where Gene jounces the limb to make Finny fall . Another setting is the Butt Room, a nasty dungeon-like room in the basement of the school where students can smoke cigarettes. This is where Gene lies about how he supposedly killed Finny. Obviously Gene didn’t kill Finny, but the students in the Butt Room needed an answer. One of the most intriguing settings in the novel is inside Finny’s house, the place where Gene admitted to Finny that he intentionally jounced the limb and allowed him to fall and shatter his leg.   The Genre of A Separate Peace is coming-of-age fiction. It could also be described as a tragedy. This novel could be realistic considering that the events in the story happen in real life, but the fact that there is no Devon school and no Gene and Finny derails any thought of this novel being real.

Glogster Project Description

I enjoyed working on the Glogster project using por and para. It helped me further understand the meanings of por and para, and helped my ability to place por and para into sentences. Being able to decorate the project with no hassle at all was very relieving. Finding the pictures and the video for the project was also very enjoyable. Overall, this project was a great way of having fun and learning Spanish at the same time. This was a very easy project to put together, and I hope to work with Glogster for future projects.

Mis Gustos Project

I enjoyed performing the ShowMe project describing the likes and dislikes of myself and my family. Gustar is now embedded into my memory, and is something that I will never forget. I believe my Spanish speaking skills have been raised. This project has embraced my Spanish knowledge with a whole new meaning.

Sensory: sight

The  sense I would like to lose least would be my sight because I like my eyes to see and it would be a dark world if your eyes were open but everything would be blank and dark. You could still hear, touch, smell, and taste, but nothing is as wonderful as your eyes. If you lose your sight, you might be clumsy and walk right into oncoming traffic, or everybody would stare at you because you are 13 years old and need a cane. You couldn’t play baseball, football, or any other sport except bingo(if that is a sport), but if you are blind you would probably need help with that game too. Being blind is just like putting you on the bench on a football team and everybody ignores you and when the team wins the superbowl, the people handing out the rings would walk straight past you and when everyone leaves the stadium , you will still be sitting there , being ignored and left out. I think it is just like being leftout of the world and there is nothing you can do about it whether you like it or not. That is why I love being able to see so much because I love playing sports and hate being left out.
